The Shetland Islands Council is the local authority for Shetland, Scotland. It was established by the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 and is the successor to the former Lerwick Town Council and Zetland County Council. This council was established in 1975 and was largely unaffected by the Scottish local government changes of the mid-1990s. It provides services in the areas of Environmental Health, Roads, Social Work, Community Development, Organisational Development, Economic Development, Building Standards, Trading Standards, Housing, Waste, Education, Burial Grounds, Port and Harbours and others. The council is allowed to collect Council Tax. The Fire Service is part of the Highlands and Islands division of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. In 2011, structural reforms saw the creation of the Political Leader position, with the Convenor becoming a civic leadership post

Brilliant museum. Extremely informative, lots to see, and really gives a picture of the Shetland Isles past and present. Gallery is good too. Nice little gift shop with items in all price ranges - perhaps a few more locally produced goods would be nice. Restaurant is fantastic, very good quality food and service.
For a small provincial museum this is top class. All aspects of Shetland's social & economic history, back to Neolithic times are represented. You will need at least 2 wet days to see everything as it can't be taken in in 1 visit. The Shetland Archive is upstairs; a comprehensive collection with very knowledgeable and helpful staff & there is always a display of contemporary art. The staff are friendly and helpful, there are full facilities for the disabled and there is a restaurant (not visited it). Don't miss the minute but excellent Geology display - Shetland has some rocks & minerals unique to Britain.

Lerwick Port Authority supports an annual meet and greet service for all visiting cruise ships which includes the provison of visitor information leaflets for passengers. Shetland Times have recently helped to rebrand the leaflets and the design incorporating a new map. They have reworked the translated copies and a new Dutch translation has been added. They were extremely helpful at all stages in the design process, with proofing the new translations, delivering our leaflets on time to meet demand and the print quality is excellent.
I regularly use the Shetland Times for both advertising and printing. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the print standard is very high. In particular the convenience of having a locally based designer when doing complex work can considerably shorten the time it takes to get work completed.
